A unique place

Since the 13th Century, I have watched over the country from the top of my towers in the heart of the Languedoc Cévennes. Once a fortress, now a traditional hotel, I keep the soul of a family home, I am THE CHATEAU DU REY. Restored in the 19th century by Viollet-le-Duc, guarantor of an art of living, I rock your sleep in a secular park at the edge of the forest.

History of the place

I was built in the Middle Age, to hold the Roman road of the Ruthenes (East Slavic People) from Nîmes to Rodez.

As the Cévennes valley had to be defended against invaders, a toll drawbridge (claimed by the seigniory of the Rey) was created on the Arboux river.

My Protestant fief was very small. The lord lived on the cultivation of wheat, barley, buckwheat, olive trees and silkworms.

I stayed in the family from the beginning.
After being burned during the French revolution, I was profoundly redesigned and rebuilt by the architect Violet le Duc in the 19th century (1848).In 1967 I was finally converted into a hotel, and my sheepfold into a restaurant, today called "L'Abeuradou", which means "the waterer" in Cévennes.
